Putting up the thermostate, putting a pan on to boil, for most Dutch people access to gas is taken as much for granted as the sun’s appearance each morning. And when they turn on the light switch they may also be using gas; many Dutch electricity generating stations are fueled by it.

Gas is welfare

The Netherlands has huge gas reserves which mean easy access to clean energy, and a major contribution to national welfare in general. This also applies to the oil that is extracted from Dutch territory.  Every company that extracts oil or gas from Dutch ground has to share a part with the government. 

So where and when did oil and gas production start in the Netherlands? What is its importance for the community? And what is its future?
